KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Fishing is a great way for kids and families to have fun outdoors, discover nature, and make happy memories together. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites families to a day of fishing from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at Forest Lake, located in Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville. A morning clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and cover basic fishing skills. There is no cost for the program, but preregistration is required by May 23.
During the morning clinic, participants will learn proper fishing techniques, different methods of fishing (pole and line, jugs, lines), as well as the various types of bait and tackle to use on Missouri’s large impoundments. Plus, there will be a presentation on fish biology and management.
Beginning at 1 p.m., participants will head to the lake and be taken out by guides on boats to try out their new skills for a day of fishing. A fish cleaning and preparation demonstration will be given after fishing. Fishing gear will be available for the day, or bring your own fishing equipment. All participants are responsible for their meals.
“For more than a million anglers, conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver. “Fishing is a wonderful pastime that all ages can participate in and best of all, there are places to wet a line all over the state.”
Thousand Hills State Park is located at 20431 Missouri 157 in Adair County, two miles west of Kirksville.
