CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO -- Trapping is a rewarding and time-honored tradition in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Trappers Association will present a two-day workshop, October 29-30, called “Beginning Trapper Workshop.”
During this hands-on course, participants will gain an understanding of trapping as a necessary technique in the control of animal populations. Course topics will include understanding the habitats of furbearing animals such as beaver, bobcat, coyote, fox, mink, muskrat, otter and raccoon. Identification of furbearers and their tracks will also be included. Other course topics will include trap selection and maintenance, trapping ethics, regulations, set location and proper fur handling techniques.
The workshop will be at Duck Creek Conservation Area beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, and then at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30. This workshop is open to all ages but those less than 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. A valid trapping permit is required for participants 16 years and older. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 24. Participants should pack a lunch each day and bring a pair of rubber boots.
