ST. JOSEPH Mo -- Celebrates trees, pick up free tree seedlings and meet Smokey Bear as the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) hosts an Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 30, in St. Joseph.
The event will be from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the MDC Northwest Regional Office, 701 James McCarthy Drive, on the Missouri Western State University campus.
Two free tree seedlings per family will be available while supplies last. The trees will include Norway spruce, redbud, hazelnut, river birch, serviceberry, wild plum, flowering dogwood, black haw, aromatic sumac, ninebark and northern red oak.
Professional foresters will be available to provide tree planting and maintenance advice. Smokey Bear will be on hand and visitors might even get to help put out a “forest fire.” A guided trail hike will begin at 11 a.m. The event is free.
The event also serves to mark 2011 as the International Year of the Forest. Missouri is fortunate to have 15.4 million acres of woods and forests for wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation and an economic boost. But the trees in our cities also serve by boosting air quality and making our streets and parks scenic.
