CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Parents can sign up their children for one of four Outdoor Adventure Camps hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. The two-day camps are free and scheduled for June 5-6, June 7-8, June 12-13 and June 14-15. Each camp is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days and will feature programs led by MDC naturalists.

“These camps give kids an excellent opportunity to discover nature,” said MDC Naturalist Angela Pierce. “We provide a safe and fun way for kids to explore a side of Missouri’s outdoors that they might not have a chance to explore on their own.”

Activities will include exploring the Nature Center grounds, a map and compass treasure hunt, canoeing, fishing and outdoor cooking. A stream study, hike and swim at Amidon Memorial Conservation Area (CA) are planned for the second day of camp.

Pierce said this camp is a great way for parents to ensure their children have a summer adventure, while not traveling far from home. Outdoor Adventure camps are also a great way to instill a love for conservation in the hearts of children, Pierce said.

The Outdoor Adventure camps are for children ages 7-11. Each child must be registered in advance and attend both days of camp. Lunch is provided on the first day, but children should bring a sack lunch for the second day. For more information on this event and what children should bring, as well as other events at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, call (573)290-5218 or go online to mdc.mo.gov.
