Logger of the Year - Ozark Region

WEST PLAINS Mo -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently named Woody Haynes of Winona as the Ozark Regional Logger of the Year for 2010.

Haynes said he began “bucking” logs at age 12 for his father’s logging business and has been a professional logger since graduating high school over 22 years ago.

According to MDC Resource Forester Steve Paes, Haynes was nominated for the award because of the excellent work he has done in timber sales for both private landowners and the MDC.

Paes explained that the yearly Ozark Regional Logger Award is given to a logger that has demonstrated the ability to carry out a timber harvest in a manner that causes the least amount of damage to the remaining resources on site. The purpose behind this award is to recognize the abilities of loggers who are practicing low-impact logging.

“These loggers take extra time to demonstrate how forest harvests should be carried out,” Paes said. "The Department of Conservation recognizes that there are many loggers scattered throughout the state who are doing an outstanding job in their timber harvesting operations, and they deserve recognition."

Criteria for choosing a logger for the award includes good working relationships with landowners and foresters, minimal damage to remaining trees and resources, preventions of soil erosion, aesthetics of the site after harvesting was completed, safe work performance and use of equipment, utilization of harvested trees, the desire to address wildlife management concerns, and use of proper forest management techniques. The logger also must have completed the Professional Timber Harvester’s Training Program sponsored by the Missouri Forest Products Association and the MDC.

Crader Distributing Company, headquartered in Marble Hill, sponsors the logger award program and is the exclusive distributor in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Southern Illinois of STIHL Outdoor Power Equipment. STIHL has donated a protective kit valued at $479 to each regional logger award recipient.
