MDC offers prescribed burn workshop in Sedalia

Published on: Feb. 4, 2014

Sedalia, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host a workshop on how to safely conduct a prescribed burn 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Pettis County USDA Service Center, 1407 W. 32nd St. in Sedalia. The workshop is free. Advance registration is requested.

Prescribed burns are used by land managers to encourage and boost native plant and tree species beneficial to wildlife. Fire is also a tool to help control unwanted growth or invasive species. For example, fire in a woodland or a meadow area may encourage native wildflowers and grasses favored by wild game and various creatures in the ecological chain.

The workshop will cover equipment, safety, methods and purposes for prescribed burns. The workshop may also be useful to land owners needing to meet requirements for CRP or EQIP farm programs.

For information or to register, call 660-326-3339, ext. 3. Light refreshments will be provided. Please register by Feb. 14.
