JOPLIN, Mo. – When used in controlled, supervised conditions, fire can be a beneficial land management tool. However, it’s important to stress that prescribed fire involves planning and on-site management. You don’t just drop a lit match in a clump of dry grass and watch it burn.

If you’re interested in learning how to use fire as a management tool on your land, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold a prescribed burn workshop from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center, 201 W. Riviera Drive in Joplin. This free workshop is for landowners who are interested in learning how to properly and safely conduct prescribed burns on their property to improve wildlife habitat.

To register for this program, to get more information or to get directions to the location of the workshop, call MDC Private Land Conservationist Randy Haas at 417-629-3423. This event has a registration deadline of Feb. 19.
