St. Joseph, Mo. – The cold winter weather offers a benefit to anglers with cabin fever – the chance to go ice fishing. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) biologists will offer an ice fishing workshop 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Mozingo Lake east of Maryville. The workshop is free.
When prolonged cold creates safe ice, anglers can catch bluegill, crappie and largemouth bass, said Tory Mason, an MDC fisheries management biologist. Holes are drilled in the ice and anglers entice fish with small jigs or natural bait such as wax worms.
“We’ll show people at the workshop various techniques for ice fishing and what kind of gear they can use,” Mason said.
MDC staff will also provide participants with bait and tackle as long as supplies last. Holes in the ice will be drilled ahead of the workshop. All participants will need to bring is plenty of warm clothing. Sub-freezing temperatures are predicted for Saturday.
Those attending are asked to pre-register for the workshop. That enables MDC staff to ensure plenty of gear and the number of holes needed in the ice. Also, should weather prompt a postponement, staff will contact those registered. For information or to register call 816-271-3100.
Mozingo Lake is about four miles east of Maryville off U.S. 136. The workshop will be held at the main boat ramp. Attendees should follow signs directing them to the main boat ramp.
