COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding a bowhunter education certification course from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, and Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the MDC Central Regional Office, 3500 E. Gans Road in Columbia. The two-day course is free, but registration is required by Aug. 17.

Topics to be covered include modern bowhunting history and development; bowhunter responsibility and ethics; different types of bows and equipment; safety information related to hunting from an elevated platform; awareness about wildlife conservation and management; show placement, game recovery, trailing and field dressing; and rules and information unique to Missouri.

"This course is an excellent refresher for veteran bowhunters or for someone new to the sport," said MDC Outdoors Skills Specialist Brian Flowers. "While it is not required by statewide game regulations, many cities that allow archery hunting inside their city limits require the bowhunter be bowhunter-education certified to take part."

Flowers also points out that many other states require bowhunter education before hunters are allowed to apply for or take part in bowhunts in their state.

Those successfully completing the course will receive a bowhunter education certification card from the Missouri Department of Conservation. Students must be 11 years of age or older to attend.
