KANSAS CITY Mo -- The Osage Trails Chapter of the Missouri Master Naturalist program will offer a training program in Kansas City to those interested in learning more about nature and wishing to teach others or conduct service projects.

The initial training includes courses in ecology that range from soil systems to how forests, wetlands and prairies intermingle in the region.

To become certified a participant must attend classes, donate 40 hours of approved volunteer service and take eight hours of advanced training within one year. The reward is getting outdoors with new knowledge and helping others do the same. Master Naturalists assist with habitat improvement, guided hikes, special events and educational programs.

The program is a cooperative effort between the Missouri Department of Conservation and the University of Missouri Extension Service.

An informational open house about the program will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on June 7 at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave. in Kansas City.

The initial training course will be held 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from Aug. 9 through Nov. 8. There will be five Saturday field trips during the program and participants must attend at least two.

There is an $80 fee for the initial training that pays for materials, speakers, special events and chapter support. There are no other dues or fees for those who become members.

Applications may be picked up at the June 7 open house or they are available online at www.gkcmn.com The deadline for submitting applications and the $80 fee is July 1. Notification letters will be mailed to applicants by July 11.
