Hummingbird Celebration to be held at Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo – It’s time for ruby throated hummingbirds to gear up for their annual fall migration to Central America. That also means it’s time for the annual Hummingbird Celebration at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center in Cape Girardeau on Saturday, Aug. 21.

The free public event will run from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. and include the banding of hummingbirds, interactive informational displays, presentations and other activities of interest to young and old alike.

Cathie Hutcheson, of Makanda, IL, will again be capturing, banding and releasing hummingbirds. She will record important information that can be used to track the annual migration of these small birds. If you’ve not had the opportunity to see these tiny marvels being banded, then this is something that you won’t want to miss.

Native plants provide the preferred nectar for hummingbirds. Those attending the celebration will be able to pick up some seeds to start or expand their own native plant garden. Many people in our area provide needed energy for hummingbirds by hanging out feeders. Come learn how to attract hummingbirds as well as how to choose and maintain feeders, which give the busy birds the needed boost for their long journey.

Doors will open at 7 a.m. with banding beginning shortly thereafter. Special presentations will be held on the hour and those attending will have a chance to win door prizes.

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is located in Cape County Park North, just off I-55 at exit 99. No advance registration is required for this program. If you have any questions regarding this event, call the Nature Center at 573-290-5218.
