KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City region's fur trading and pioneer past will be celebrated at the second annual Fall Rendezvous on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24, at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Lake City Shooting Range in northeast Jackson County. The event is hosted by MDC in partnership with the Missouri Offhand Association.
Fur trappers and traders were active in western Missouri in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and Native Americans traded furs, hides and game for guns and goods.
The rendezvous at MDC's Lake City Shooting Range, 28505 E. Truman Road, will recreate the era with special shoots for muzzleloading firearms, tomahawk and knife throwing, blacksmithing, and youth activities. Other youth activities will be held at the event hourly as well as an hourly firing of the candy cannon starting at 10 a.m. This event is free.
Re-enactors and black powder enthusiasts are welcome. The public is also invited to watch shooters in authentic 1800s clothing and gear recreate scenes from pioneer life. Families are welcome to try out archery and BB gun shooting. Also, black powder rifles and shotguns will be available to visitors to shoot, said Steve Elliott, Lake City range supervisor.
"Some of our participants will be available to give instruction about black powder guns and then assist people if they would like to try out shooting one," Elliott said.
The rendezvous event hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Black powder shoots will utilize the Lake City trap and skeet range as well as the rifle range. The range will also maintain its normal weekend shooting hours for general public use for all firearms from noon to 6 p.m. Normal range fees will apply for general use.
