HANNIBAL, Mo. — Families and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sept. 28. This day-long event, co-sponsored by The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Warren G. See South Spillway recreation area at Mark Twain Lake.

Activities include an archery (NASP) tournament, shooting range access with certified range officers and instructors, fishing pole casting instruction and practice, a BB-gun range from Bass Pro Shop, hands-on exhibits and displays including turkey trapping demonstrations, and a live snake educational booth. Other activities include electrofishing demonstrations, bird dog demonstrations, turkey calling demonstrations and special presentations by conservation groups and concessions.

Information about various types of outdoor activities at local publicly owned areas will be available from staff working the event and from literature that can be picked up that day. Additionally, members from partner organizations including National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Whitetails Unlimited, Quail Forever, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Missouri Trapper’s Association, Missouri State Water Patrol, Missouri Rural Water Association and many more will be hosting informational booths and available to answer questions. All parts of the event are free to the public.

National Hunting and Fishing Day is observed annually on the fourth Saturday in September. President Richard Nixon signed the first proclamation for the event in 1972. It was created to celebrate traditional outdoor sports and their role in conservation of wildlife. Beyond the pure outdoor enjoyment that fishing and hunting provide, economists have shown that Missouri’s 1.3 million hunters and anglers generate $2.7 billion in economic benefits to our state. That includes about 29,000 jobs.

The Warren G. See Spillway is located on Highway J, south of the dam.
