CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A well-managed pond adds wildlife habitat, backyard fishing opportunities and beauty to rural property, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). MDC's Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host a Pond Management Workshop March 29 from 6:30 p.m., for landowners and anyone interested in pond management.

According to the MDC, this workshop will demonstrate how to construct a multipurpose pond and care for its watershed.

Concerns about having large bass in ponds, whether or not to treat aquatic vegetation and how many fish can be harvested from a pond in a single year will be addressed. These questions and many more will be answered by MDC Fisheries Management Biologists Salvador Mondragon and Jason Crites.

“Topics will include pond construction, fish habitat requirements, pond ecology, water quality, sport fish stocking, aquatic vegetation management, fish population dynamics, and other issues related to pond management,” said Mondragon.

He added that this workshop is one way MDC works with Missourians to sustain healthy forests, fish and wildlife. Pond management and conservation also help make Missouri a great place to hunt and fish and help enrich our overall quality of life.

Registration is required and this event is designed for ages 12 and up. For more information on this event and others at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, call 573-290-5218 or go online to www.mdc.mo.gov.
