CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Cape Girardeau County Master Gardeners will host the sixth annual Native Plant Seminar at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center on March 3.
Dave Tylka, biology professor at St. Louis Community College and author of Native Landscaping for Wildlife and People, will highlight the importance of planting native wildflowers, grasses, trees and shrubs in backyards. Not only does this add variety and color to a landscape, it also attracts wildlife and reduces the cost of energy-consuming lawns, according to the MDC.
Landscaping with native plant species provides urban habitat for a diversity of wildlife and offers alternatives to the traditional water- and chemical-dependent manicured lawns.
“This year’s seminar offers a variety of sessions that encourage participants to become stewards of their environments from developing habitat for butterflies to mimicking nature in their own backyards,” said Sara Turner, Nature Center manager.
Turner said this program is an example of how the MDC helps make Missouri a great place to live by helping people discover nature.
Native Plant Seminar participants continue to show how Missourians care about conserving wildlife and native plants by taking what they have learned and putting it into action, according to Turner.
