Mallards in Flooded Timber
In the spring, drake mallards look their best. However, these feathers come at a cost. Proteins are needed to manufacture these distinct feathers. During late winter mallards can obtain these necessary proteins by eating aquatic invertebrates that are found in the flooded leaf litter of bottomland forests.
