The woods are beautiful in autumn and full of yummy things to eat. We will learn about the fruits and nuts growing all around us and how we can use them. Afterwards we will be going for a short hike around nature center grounds to learn to identify the trees and plants we just learned.

Catfishing Basics in the Evening

Evening is the perfect time to wet a line and try to catch a catfish! Not sure what bait to use or how to avoid those barbs? We will begin inside with a little “catfishing how-to” and then try our luck at the Kids Fishing Pond. Equipment will be provided, but you may bring your own.

The month of October offers hunters a crack at harvesting their own turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, but few turkey hunters take advantage of the opportunity. Turkey habits change throughout the year making fall turkey hunting much different than spring turkey hunting. Attend this clinic to learn the differences and what it takes to get your turkey dinner. (Ages 6 and up) What’s that rustling sound in the leaves? Look around. If the noise isn’t a squirrel hunting nuts or a robin hunting worms, then most likely it’s a lizard scuttling away from you! If you walk quietly and look carefully, you may see other lizards sunning themselves on rocks or fence posts. Do you want to know more about them? What kind did you see? What do they eat? Can lizards really lose their tails? Have fun learning about lizards with activities and crafts. (Reservations begin Sept 6 by calling 314-301-1500.)

Lesson 4: Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families how to properly select a fishing lure based on desired fish species, weather and water conditions. In addition, participants will learn how to identify and understand fishing regulations. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Did the young ones miss out on your fishing trip this summer? Afraid they’d tangle the line? Meet up with us as we introduce fishing, poles, worms and fish to your future fishermen and women. Adults will have a chance to work one on one with their preschooler as they experience “fishing” for the first time. Participants should dress for the outdoors and bring a water bottle. This program meets at the Forest Park Hatchery and Educational Fishing Lakes in Forest Park. (Reservations begin September 1.)

Fall is a wonderful time to go camping; the days are warm and clear while the evenings are cool and crisp. We want to share the joys of fall camping with you! We’ll learn how to build a fire, cook outdoors, paddle a canoe, and cast a line. We’ll camp out weather permitting (there is other shelter if necessary). Girls 12-17 welcome with a female adult.
