Get a "taste" for crustaceans as you meet (and eat!) the lowly crayfish. Learn about this crusty crustacean through activities, games, and exhibits. Bring a pre-washed piece of cotton (or any cloth material) to paint with crayfish stamps. Ages 7-12. Please, no younger siblings and only one adult per group of kids. Registration begins July 1. Lesson 3: Five Common Missouri Fish-Their Anatomy, Habitat, and Life Cycle combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic biological concepts and functions specific to largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid sunfish, channel catfish and rainbow trout. Participants will learn the different components of fish anatomy and their functions. In addition, participants will learn about various types of fish habitat and aquatic food webs. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Hike Hercules Glades Wilderness with Volunteer Naturalist Mike Mihalik. One mile of this hike will be wading through a creek to cool off so pack water shoes. Meet at the nature center and carpool. Bring a sack lunch and water and wear clothes you can get wet and sturdy shoes. Hike is approximately five miles and rated moderate to difficult. Ages 18-adult. Registration begins August 2. Join us as we go back in time to discover what plants and animals were used for food during by soldiers and citizens over 150 years ago. You will be amazed at the variety of foods that people relied on. In addition to an indoor portion, we will take a short hike to find some of these wild edible plants that are still food for humans today. Bring a bottle of water and hiking shoes.

Join insect specialists, biologists, artists, and enthusiasts for an evening devoted to discovering insects. Grab your entire family and participate in some creepy-crawly fun for all ages. The Missouri Department of Conservation and The Department of Natural Resources proudly present Kids Fishing Day, August 20, at Roaring River State Park. Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at Roaring River State Park’s Kids’ Fishing Day. At Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under will be able to pick up free trout tags at the hatchery office any time on the Friday before the event or all day on Saturday. A portion of the fishing area of the park will be reserved for youths age 15 and under. Volunteers will be on hand to help out. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are welcome to help kids, but only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish by themselves. Free hotdogs, chips, and soda will be available 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Education is also part of Kids’ Fishing Day. Throughout the day, seminars will be held on fish cleaning, fish cooking, knife sharpening, knot tying, fly tying and fly casting, how to fish Roaring River, stream biology and other subjects. A hatchery tour will be held to show how trout are raised. A program on Missouri Snakes will be given using live specimens. Activities such as critter stamp head bands will also be available. If kids attend three classes they will be entered into a drawing for prizes. The drawing will be held at 5:00 p.m. Children must be present to win. Classes are also open to the whole family, but only children may enter the drawings. Volunteers are needed to help with this event. Individuals wishing to volunteer do not need to be experienced anglers. Fishing starts at 7:00 A.M. and will continue until 8:00 P.M. Come out and enjoy beautiful Roaring River State Park and let the youngsters catch a fish. This event will be held rain or shine. Roaring River State Park is located on Highway112 about seven miles south of Cassville, Missouri.
