Tree Heights and Distances from Utilities

Shrubs

These shrubs (up to 15 feet tall) are okay to plant next to utilities:

  • Aromatic sumac
  • Hazelnut
  • Ninebark
  • Ozark witchhazel
  • Shining sumac
  • Shrub lespedeza

Small trees

Plant these trees (under 30 feet tall) at least 15 feet from utilities:

  • Eastern redbud
  • Flowering dogwood
  • Gray dogwood
  • Hawthorn
  • Holly, deciduous
  • Viburnum
  • Wild plum

Medium trees

Plant these trees (30 to 60 feet tall) 35 feet from utilities:

  • Austrian pine
  • Eastern redcedar
  • Jack pine
  • Persimmon
  • Red mulberry
  • River birch
  • Virginia pine

Large trees

Plant these trees (over 60 feet tall) 45 feet from utilities:

  • Bald cypress
  • Blackgum
  • Black oak
  • Black walnut
  • Bur oak
  • Eastern white pine
  • Hackberry
  • Kentucky coffeetree
  • Northern red oak
  • Pecan
  • Pin oak
  • Red pine
  • Scarlet oak
