Many Methods to Catch Some Croakers

A favorite outdoor pastime of many Missourians, frogging spans the gap between hunting and fishing. MDC allows harvest of frogs by hand, hand net, atlatl, gig, bow, trotline, throw line, limb line, bank line, jug line, snagging, snaring, grabbing or pole and line with a fishing permit. With a hunting permit, frogs can be harvested using .22-caliber or smaller rimfire rifle or pistol, pellet gun, bow, crossbow, atlatl or by hand or hand net. The use of an artificial light is permitted when frogging. Children under the age of 16 and adults over 65 are not required to have a permit.

    Missouri’s largest frog is green to olive to brown. Even if you can’t spy one, it’s not hard to hear this common species when the males call a deep, sonorous “jug-a-rum, jug-a-rum” that can be heard from half a mile away or more.

  • Frog RegulationsBullfrog and green frog season opens at sunset June 30 and runs through Oct. 31. You can take them by a variety of methods using a small game or fishing permit. Daily limit is eight combined total of both species; 16 in possession.
  • Green FrogLooks similar to the bullfrog but is smaller and has a ridge of skin along the sides of the back that is not found on bullfrogs. This is a game animal in Missouri.
