Black Powder Deer Hunt

The firearms deer hunting season is made up of five portions:

Urban zones portion

Dates: Oct. 10–13, 2014

Location: Only areas shown on the following maps

Shooting Hours: One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset

Limits

  • Only antlerless deer may be harvested during the urban zones portion.
  • You may fill only two firearms antlerless deer hunting permits in each urban zone county or section of a county

Allowed Methods

 Methods allowed during the urban zones portion are the same as those for Youth portions.

Prohibited Methods

  • Some methods may be prohibited by local ordinances. For example, some cities allow only archery methods.
  • Methods prohibited during the urban zones portion are the same as those lor Youth portions.

Firearms hunting is allowed only in counties or county sections shaded blue or orange in the map above. Areas in white are closed to firearms hunting during the antlerless portion.

  •      These counties or county sections are closed to firearms hunting during the antlerless portion.
  •      You may fill two firearms antlerless deer hunting permits in these counties or county sections during firearms deer season (all portions combined). Resident landowners and lessees with at least 75 acres may harvest additional antlerless deer using no-cost Resident Landowner Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permits.
  •     You may fill one firearms antlerless deer hunting permit in these counties or county sections during firearms deer season (all portions combined). Resident landowners and lessees with at least 75 acres may harvest additional antlerless deer using no-cost Resident Landowner Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permits.

Youth Portions

Dates: To participate, you must be at least 6 and no older than 15 on the opening day of the early youth portion.

  • Early Youth Portion: Nov. 1–2, 2014
  • Late Youth Portion: Jan. 3–4, 2015

Location: Statewide

Shooting Hours: One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset

Limits

  • Only one deer (of either sex) may be taken during the early youth portion. If you have more than one permit, you must use them in another portion.
  • Only one antlered deer may be taken during firearms deer season (all portions combined).
  • Each county has a limit on the number of firearms antlerless deer hunting permits you may fill during firearms deer season (all portions combined). See Page 7.
  • The antler-point restriction does not apply during the youth portions.

Allowed Methods

  • Centerfire pistols, revolvers, or rifles using expanding-type bullets such as lead or copper
  • Shotguns (including .410) with slugs only
  • Air-powered guns, .40 caliber or larger, charged only from an external high-compression power source (external hand pump, air tank, or air compressor)
  • Muzzleloading or cap-and-ball firearms, .40 caliber or larger and capable of firing only a single projectile at one discharge. In-lines and scopes are allowed.
  • Multiple-barreled muzzleloading or cap-and-ball firearms and/or muzzleloading or cap-and-ball handguns, including revolvers, .40 caliber or larger, are allowed and may be carried in addition to a muzzleloading or cap-and-ball rifle.
  • Longbows, compound bows, and recurve bows of any draw weight. Hand-held string-releasing devices, illuminated sights, scopes, and quickpoint sights are allowed.
  • Crossbows
  • Atlatls

Prohibited Methods

  • Self-loading firearms with capacity of more than 11 cartridges in magazine and chamber combined
  • Ammunition propelling more than one projectile at a single discharge (such as buckshot)
  • Full hard metal case projectiles
  • Fully automatic firearms
  • Any sighting device that casts a beam of light on the game
  • Electronic calls or electronically activated calls
  • Night vision equipment
  • Use of bait
  • Use of dogs
  • Additional methods may be prohibited by local ordinances.
