Hunter Ed Online
If time is a problem, consider signing up for our first-ever Hunter Ed Online. Although you will need to schedule a field day to complete your training, you can do the written portion online, anytime.
Who can take Hunter Ed Online?
- Anyone 11 years of age or older; however, the materials are written at a 9th-grade reading level.
- If you're between the ages of 11 and 14, consider asking an adult for help with the material.
What does the online test cover and how long does it take to complete?
- The online test covers all the written material required for the course (worth five hours' credit)
- With self-paced materials, you determine the length of test time—however, you must take the final test in one computer session.
- Take unlimited chapter reviews and pre-tests—for free.
- Take and pass a final age-appropriate (based on age 14 and up) exam with a score of 80 percent or better.
How much does it cost?
- It costs nothing to study or review online. A payment of $15 is required when you're ready to take the final test and want to see the results.
- Before receiving online test results, you must pay $15 to the Hunter Ed Online host company. MDC receives no monies from this payment.
- Once you pay, you will receive your final test results.
- If you pass, print out a course certificate to take to the field day review and testing.
- Take note—you are not Hunter Education Certified at this point.
- You must schedule a final field component to complete your training and receive your certificate.
- If you fail the online test, you can retake it, but you will have to pay another $15 fee for each final test you take.
When do I take the field component?
- If you pass the written test, you will receive a toll-free number to call and register for the field day requirement.
- Visit this site to choose from a list of scheduled field days.
- Field day is worth another five hours' credit.
How long can I wait between the online test and the field day?
- The online certificate is good for one year.
- If you do not attend a field day within that year, you will have to retake the online course and final test with fee again or attend the traditional free 10-hour course.
- While waiting to take the field day portion, you can revisit the Web site to study, review and take pre-tests as much as you want for free.
What will I do during the field day?
- Nothing—unless you remember to bring your printed certificate indicating you have passed the online test.
- Review critical skills necessary for safe and responsible hunting.
- Take a multiple-choice test covering your online studies and the day's review items.
- Take a final hands-on demonstration test of the various skills reviewed.
- If you pass with 80 percent on both tests during the field day, you will receive Hunter Education Certification.
- If you fail, you will have to pay another $15 to take the full online course or go through the traditional free 10-hour classroom course.
What else should I keep in mind when planning for the field day?
- Don't forget to take your online printed certificate to the field day.
- Field day requires full attendance and passing of both the written and hands-on tests.
- Youth under 16 must attend with an adult.
- Youth under 16 must provide proof of age (birth certificate, school ID, etc.), and those 16 and older must have valid picture ID.
- All attendees must bring a sack meal.
