"Kettles"
Flocks or "kettles" of several hundred migrating broad-winged hawks soaring overhead are a common sight in late September. Usually appearing after the passage of a low pressure weather system, the hawks circle upward 1,000 feet or more on thermal air currents rising in mid morning then glide southward. -- Jim Rathert
