People often send us photos that seem to depict large cats. The shape is clear, but the scale is hard to judge. Is this animal a house cat, bobcat or mountain lion?

Mystery Cat Identified

Conclusion: With no solid reference for comparison, the cat in the original photo appears to be much larger than it actually is. After an onsite investigation using accurately sized silhouettes of a house cat, bobcat and mountain lion, the Mountain Lion Response Team concluded that the cat in the original photo was about 13 inches tall at the shoulder. The size--and the animal's long tail--indicates that it is an adult house cat.
