So You Want to Do a Prescribed Burn on Your Place?

Feb 10, 2011

backfireset resizeFire has been used as a management tool by the Missouri Department of Conservation for more than 30 years, but it isn’t as simple as dropping a match and watching it burn. To assist local landowners who want to use prescribed fire on their own property, the Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting a Prescribed Burn Workshop on Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Twin Pines Conservation Education Center in Winona. Lunch will be provided to all workshop participants.

Expect to learn when to burn, what to burn, how to burn safely and much more.

As part of the workshop, conditions allowing, there will be a live demonstration burn where participants will be able to apply firsthand, on the ground, what they learned in the classroom. Personal protective equipment is required and will be provided.

For more information or to register, contact Gary Gognat at 573-226-3616 ext. 225 or Mike Gaskins at 573-226-3241 ext. 106. There is no cost for the workshop.

Thanks for all the wonderful replies to our blog. We are proud to say this is a team effort to make sure that good information is delivered to fellow conservation enthusiasts. There is a tremendous amount of information available both on the blogs and the rest of the MDC website. If you can't find what you are looking for on the web, don't hesitate to give any of our offices a call. We may not have the answer right away but we will certainly do our best to get it and we really enjoy talking with our customers. We want to help Missourians and all our visitors enjoy the forest, fish and wildlife we are foutunate enough to have here in our state.  Thanks again on behalf of the Current River District Conservation Team.

I must express my thanks to you for passing along such good information just in the nick of time. I have browsed through many web sites that were not productive. Your competence and kindness in playing with all the details was very helpful. I'm not sure what I would have done if I hadn't discovered such a stuff like this. It's possible to at this moment relish my future. Thanks for your time so much for the specialized and results-oriented help. I won't think twice to refer your web site to anybody who ought to have direction on this topic.

I appreciate all the good information and "tricks of the trade" I find on your web site and just realized that I never expressed respect to the web site owner for those secrets. Thanks for being very kind and for having variety of superb subject areas millions of individuals are really needing to learn about. Our own sincere regret for not saying thanks to you sooner.

I wish to express thanks to you for providing such good information to landowners. After researching through the search engines and finding information which was not helpful, I came across your site. Thanks for the service you provide.

I wanted to post a small note so as to thank you again for relaying the superb knowledge you've discussed relating to prescribed burning. Certainly there are numerous more enjoyable moments in the future for people who read carefully your blog post.

My spouse and I were lucky that our son could complete his project through ideas he received from your blog. The explanations you made, the easy blog navigation - it's most spectacular. Thanks for all the pieces!

Thanks for the comment Calypso Bay.  At a prescribed burn workshop, landowners learn how to prepare a burn plan although MDC staff are available to assist as needed, and how to conduct the burn.  This isn't just classroom time as a hands-on component is included.  We want landowners to feel comfortable managing their own property.  That does include working with local volunteer fire departments as well.  We feel that fire is an important tool in the managers bag of tricks.  Thanks again for the interest.

Controlled burns are a part of the natural eco-system here in Australia - especially in a country with as much bush as we have!. It's great to see there are workshops on this thing, but it should be left to the fire fighters to do though..
