Working Together for Wildlife

Dec 21, 2007

I just got a notice from Amy Buechler that the 200th group just signed up to support Missouri’s Teaming with Wildlife Coalition: it’s the Ozarks Master Naturalist chapter in West Plains.

People all over the United States are joining to say that healthy wildlife and habitats matter—and we need to do something now before it’s too costly and too late. They’re doing this by signing up as group members of Teaming with Wildlife, a state-by-state and ultimately national coalition that gets its message heard by members of Congress. Thanks to their efforts, the recent federal budget bill kept some funding to go back to the states for wildlife conservation in spite of some efforts to use the money elsewhere.

In Missouri, the Wildlife Action Plan created last year will help guide where we (government agencies, private organizations, local people) can work together to make good things happen. Through collaboration of state and local groups and individuals, 33 opportunity areas were identified in the plan. These are places where some of our state’s richest wildlife and unique habitats need help now, while they’re still healthy—and where focused efforts can have a big impact.

Take a look at the opportunity areas to see what’s in your part of the state. Whether you are just an interested individual or part of a larger group, this is a good time to find out how you can help leave something wild and healthy for future generations of Missourians.
