image of Stream Program Health Conservation mapThe health of many St. Louis area streams is threatened by a variety of problems, such as, channelization, uncontrolled stormwater runoff, and urban sprawl, to name a few. The Stream Healthy Conservation Program aims to conserve the ecological health of those St. Louis region streams and watersheds that are still healthy, but are most threatened.

Streams included in the program are:

The main objective of the Stream Health Conservation Program is to develop a watershed conservation plan and group to support or implement the plan for each threatened stream. To be successful, each plan must address impacts to the four components of a watershed:

  1. Stormwater and sediment erosion control in the uplands
  2. Constriction of the floodplain
  3. Protection of a vegetated stream corridor
  4. Protection of a natural stream channel

This objective can be successful only if all concerned parties are involved. Landowners, concerned citizens, citizen and conservation groups, governmental agencies, and others will all need to cooperate to ensure stream conservation and other interests are satisfied within each watershed.

Upper Peruque Creek Watershed

Watershed: Peruque Creek, Year Sampled: 2002

Peruque Creek was sampled at six locations in the watershed above Lake St. Louis. A total of 31 species were collected. This number of species shows good diversity, however, since several of these are introduced species actual endemic biodiversity is much lower.

Physical Habitat Data

Physical Habitat measurements were taken at all fish sample sites. The data above suggests that habitat in Peruque is still of sufficient quality to support a healthy biodiversity of aquatic organisms despite rapid degradation within the watershed. An average embeddedness in the watershed of 61.3% is a good indicator that degradation may soon take its toll on the inhabitants of the stream.

Pool Depth Range 1.50 m - .10 m
Substrate Composition in Pools Clay Ð 11% Fine Gravel Ð 21%,

Substrate Composition in Riffles Sand Ð 14% Course Gravel Ð 50%

Average Embeddedness of Substrate 61.3%

Water Quality Data

Water quality data shown here was taken at each of the fish sample sites. Since the data was only recorded once at each site, on the day of sampling, it is merely a "snapshot" of conditions on the stream that day. All of these water quality measurements fall within normal expected levels for the watershed.
