Project Description

Area Name:

Wigwam School Access

Location:

The area is located in Morgan County, Missouri (T40N, R19W, Section 15). Going to the area from Laurie, you travel north on Highway 135 about 10 miles, turn left (south) on Ivy Bend Road (Lake Road 135-12) continue to Webb Loop. Turn right (west) and follow Webb Loop approximately 1.6 miles to the area sign. The access is on the north side of Lake of the Ozarks at lake mile 66.2 of the Osage River arm.v

Area Size:

Wigwam School Access is 78 acres in size. The ÒfootprintÓ of the access development will be approximately six acres.

Control/Ownership:

The area was purchased by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in 2000.

Facilities Development:

The Department of Conservation will construct a concrete entrance road (1,700Õ long, 20Õ wide); a primary, concrete parking area of sufficient size to accommodate 59 vehicles with trailers and two individual vehicles; a secondary (overflow), concrete parking area of sufficient size to accommodate 30 vehicles with trailers (Alternates 1 and 2 on attached site plan); concrete two-lane boat ramp (116Õ long, 32Õ wide); courtesy dock (12Õ x 24Õ); floating fishing dock (18Õ x 36Õ); fish weighing platform (an extention of the concrete pavement; 12Õ x 20Õ); double, precast, sealed vault privy; and concrete walkways needed to connect facilities. Facilities will meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Security lighting in the vicinity of the boat ramp and other facilities will also be installed. Areas disturbed by construction will be seeded and mulched.

Estimated Project Costs:

Total Project Cost $1,240,418.23
State Share: $310,104.56
Federal Share: $930,313.67

Availability to Users:

Lake of the Ozarks (55,500 acres) is the second largest reservoir in Missouri and is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Midwest. Most of the lakeÕs 1,300 miles of shoreline is privately owned; and much of the shoreline, particularly on the lower end of the lake, is developed with resorts, condominiums, homes, marinas, and other businesses.

The lake has relatively few public fishing and boating accesses, and all are very heavily used. The Department of Conservation has five developed access areas and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has four developed public access areas. At the extreme upper end of the lake, near Truman Dam, the City of Warsaw has one small public access area and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has two public accesses.

Wigwam School Access will meet a serious need for public fishing and boating access on the north shore of the Osage River arm of Lake of the Ozarks. The nearest public accesses on the north side of the lake are Warsaw Harbor (USACE, lake mile 92) and Shawnee Bend Access (MDC, lake mile 11), and the nearest public access by water is Brown Bend Access (MDC, lake mile 61.5) on the south side of Osage River arm. We anticipate that Wigwam School Access will receive heavy public use as soon as it is completed.
