Proposed Deer Hunting Regulation Changes on Some Conservation Areas

For the 2016-2017 deer season, the Department is considering changes to some conservation areas’ deer regulations concerning allowed hunting methods, and we want to hear from you.

Area Name Current Regulations Proposed Regulations Justification
Arrow-Wood CA Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. The area is large enough to make it an enjoyable area for archery hunters if that is the only method allowed. The larger Hunnewell CA, which allows firearms hunting, is in close proximity and will provide a diversity of opportunities for the public.
Bee Hollow CA Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Changing the regulation provides hunters with the potential to harvest older age class bucks. The change also aligns with neighboring landowner goals for deer management.
Black Island CA (Gayoso Bend, (Cottonwood) and Bradford Units) Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. Only antlered deer may be taken during the youth, November, and alternative methods portion of the firearms deer season with a firearms any-deer hunting permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. Closed to firearms deer hunting during the urban zones and antlerless portions. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. The area has multiple sections and they have differing deer regulation options. This change will make all 3 sections consistent.
Black Island CA (Wolf Bayou and Desoto Units) Only archery methods may be used. Deer hunting with firearms is prohibited. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. The area currently has multiple sections and they have differing deer regulation options. This change will make all 3 sections consistent.
Blue Springs Creek CA Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. This area is 859 acres and parallels Highway N and Blue Springs Road. Much of the area is less than ¼-mile wide and includes four miles of spring-fed Blue Springs Creek managed for trout.  Changed to a more appropriate method for the area size?
Bruns (Dr. Bernard) Access Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. This area is only 77 acres and archery-only methods are appropriate for this area.
Bunch Hollow CA Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. Deer populations have plummeted on this area due to overharvest and at least two years of extensive Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease events. More conservative methods will increase deer populations.
Bushwhacker Lake Only archery and muzzleloading methods may be used. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only managed hunts will be held on this area. This area will be managed with the goal of increasing the proportion of 2.5+ year-old bucks in the harvest. In order to accomplish this, a managed hunt will need to be used in order to reduce the harvest of younger aged bucks.
Canaan CA Archery and firearms deer hunting is permitted for antlered or antlerless deer on the following permits only: archer’s hunting permit and firearms any-deer permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. Closed to firearms deer hunting during the urban zones and antlerless portions. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. Archery and muzzleloader methods will provide a better range of deer hunting opportunities in surrounding area.
Clubb Creek CA Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Due to small size and split into three different sections, this area is better suited for archery methods. It has been managed with archery-only methods for the past several years.
Corning CA Archery and firearms deer hunting is permitted for antlered or antlerless deer on the following permits only: archer’s hunting permit and firearms any-deer hunting permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. The methods change will provide additional varied hunting opportunity and regional distribution of conservation areas while maintaining deer management goals.
Dark Hollow NA Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Dark Hollow is small at 315 acres. The proposed regulation change will increase opportunities for hunters to take does, while mitigating some of the heavy harvest using high-powered rifles on a small area that receives high hunting pressure.
Davisdale CA Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. This area was a bucks-only area and changing methods will remove a specified number of antlerless deer and increase the harvest of mature bucks. This will provide excellent deer hunting opportunities and achieve deer harvest more compatible with neighboring landowners.
Deer Ridge CA Archery and firearms deer hunting is permitted for antlered or antlerless deer on the following permits only: archer’s hunting permit and firearms any-deer hunting permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Habitat work and limited antlerless harvest in the past 10 years has grown the deer population in recent years. In future years, if the new methods do not achieve population goals, additional antlerless firearms managed hunts will be held to keep the population in check.
Deroin Bend CA Archery and firearms deer hunting is permitted for antlered or antlerless deer on the following permits only: archer’s hunting permit and firearms any-deer hunting permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. This methods change will provide additional varied hunting opportunity and regional distribution of conservation areas while maintaining deer management goals.
Diamond Grove Prairie CA Only archery methods may be used. Deer hunting with firearms is prohibited. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Changing from archery-only to muzzleloader and archery methods will increase hunter opportunity while still achieving deer management goals.
Dodd Access Only archery methods may be used. Deer hunting with firearms is prohibited. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. The access is comprised of forest and woodlands except for the boat ramp and associated parking lot. Due to its small 40-acre size, deer primarily move through the area. This change will provide the most opportunity to more safely harvest deer on the area.
Douglas Branch CA Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed.  Muzzleloader and archery methods will allow ample deer hunting opportunity and should achieve deer management goals.
Duck Creek CA (North) Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. This 120-acre portion of Duck Creek had different deer regulations from the rest of the area. Changing to archery-only methods will make all portions of Duck Creek consistent. This will reduce confusion among area users and still achieve deer management goals.
Flight Lake CA Archery and firearms deer hunting is permitted for antlered or antlerless deer on the following permits only: archer’s hunting permit and firearms any-deer permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. Closed to firearms deer hunting during the urban zones and antlerless portions. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Due to its small size and the increase in waterfowl hunting on the area in the past 10 years, it is recommended that this area’s methods be changed. This will reduce potential for hunter conflicts and achieve deer management goals.
Hazel Hill Lake Archery and firearms deer hunting is permitted for antlered or antlerless deer on the following permits only: archer’s hunting permit and firearms any-deer permit. No archery antlerless or firearms antlerless permits may be used. Closed to firearms deer hunting during the urban zones and antlerless portions. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. Due to its small size, limited deer population, and centrally-located lake, it is recommended that this area be archery only. The 71-acre lake bisects the area effectively makes two smaller areas. Changing methods will help minimize angler-hunter conflicts.
Kearn (J N Turkey) Mem WA (Units 1 and 2) Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. Only antlered deer may be taken during the youth, November, and alternative methods portion of the firearms deer season with a firearms any-deer hunting permit. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is not allowed. This area has a chronically low deer population and receives extremely heavy hunting pressure from personnel from the Air Force Base and due to proximity to Warrensburg and Kansas City.
Keysville Towersite Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. This area is only 80 acres and there is no parking lot on the area, just a gated entry where a county road ends and provides access to the fire tower. Parking in front of gate has become a problem and eliminates access to the tower. A change to archery-only methods would decrease parking conflicts.
Lanagan Towersite Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. This small area sits adjacent to County Road EE and Shanghai Road and has four residential properties boarding the area. A change to muzzleloader and archery methods allows for ample deer hunting opportunity and achieves deer management goals.
Magnolia Hollow CA Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. This area has a decreasing deer population and a very high user rate. The muzzleloader and archery methods are the best option to achieve and maintain deer population goals and hunter satisfaction.
McPike Access Only archery methods may be used. Deer hunting with firearms is prohibited. All other statewide deer seasons and limits apply. All methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Allowing all methods will provide additional hunting opportunity.
Perry (Ralph and Martha) Memorial CA Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. This area has a chronically low deer population and receives extremely heavy hunting pressure from personnel at the Air Force Base and students from Warrensburg.
Phenix Access Statewide deer seasons and limits apply. Only muzzleloader and archery methods allowed. Use of antlerless permits is allowed. Wish to change methods due to the small size of the area.
Pony Express Lake CA Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. This methods change should allow us to balance deer numbers without managed hunts.
Seat (Emmett and Leah) Memorial CA Antlered or antlerless deer may be taken on an archer’s hunting permit. This methods change should allow us to balance deer numbers without managed hunts.
