Careers in Conservation

We created our internship program in 2004 to provide quality experiences for students and address our agency’s recruitment needs. The number of internships we offer each year depends on our current budget. In 2010, we were able to offer opportunities to sixteen interns. Our interview process is very competitive.

Professional experience for talented students

The MDC Workforce Council has established the following objectives to provide students with exceptional work opportunities throughout their education:

  • Attract and mentor talented students to the Department.
  • Expose students to a variety of professional tasks and the MDC business culture, while offering compensation.
  • Identify future Department employees.

Undergraduate and graduate positions

We offer undergraduate and graduate positions that typically run concurrent with college semesters or summer break. The program follows a traditional approach to engage students during studies for career exploration and to gain practical experience beyond the classroom. At the undergraduate level the emphasis is on recruitment, career exploration, and introduction of top performing students to MDC. At the graduate level the emphasis is on expanding and enhancing the student's experience and knowledge. It can also include graduate students who suspend graduate studies or have recently completed graduate studies, in order to gain professional experience. Interns are not eligible for benefits.

Undergraduate

Most students will participate in a single undergraduate internship with the Department. Students are eligible for the program when they meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate student at an accredited university/college in good standing and enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
  • Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 45 credit hours.
  • Complete on-line application (http://mdc.mo.gov/about/jobs).
  • Additional qualifications will be included on the internship announcement.

Graduate

Students can participate in a single graduate internship with the Department. Work at this level may be based on graduate thesis or specific projects. Students with technical experience can also be hired for workloads similar to entry level professional positions. Technical training may be provided to students if it will enhance work performance. The graduate internship opportunities will not exceed one year unless extended by the Internship committee. Graduate students are eligible for the program when they meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program or recent completion of a graduate degree (within last four months).
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
  • Completed on-line application (http://mdc.mo.gov/about/jobs), including additional faculty recommendations.

  • Provide two faculty recommendations.
  • Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Additional qualifications will be included on the internship announcement.

Salary: $13.57 per hour.

Unpaid Internships

MDC does not provide an official unpaid internship program in order to help students fulfill a class requirement or certification. However, you can contact your area’s regional office for possible unpaid internship opportunities. Some regional offices have a ride along program with the Conservation Agents. Please check with your region for specific requirements. Also, you can look into “Being a Conservation Volunteer”. Please see the link provided below.

MDC staff does have limited opportunities to work with colleges and universities to provide field experiences for classes. Professors should contact their MDC regional office for information on MDC staff working with your students.
